Mediterranean anti-pollution protocol agreed
Representatives of the EU and of countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea have finalised a new protocol to the UN Barcelona convention on the region's marine environment. Replacing an earlier agreement, the new protocol strengthens rules on how to respond to emergencies and introduces additional requirements in relation to intentional pollution caused by ships cleaning out tanks. It also encourages joint action to combat accidental leaks. The new protocol requires ratification by six states to enter into force. See Barcelona convention.
