Norway offers alternative heating subsidies
The Norwegian State Housing Bank, the self-described "main instrument for implementing national housing policy" with a stake in half of all residential property, today announced financial incentives for new homes incorporating non-electric heating technologies. Loans of NKr140,000 (euros 17,890) and grants of NKr10,000 will be available for heat pumps, solar panels, biofuel systems and the like, the bank said. Norway's heavy reliance on hydro electricity for heating has raised fears of power shortages and provoked public resentment at rising electricity prices. These loans could reduce such dependence on hydropower. See press release.
