Barcelona water protest ahead of EU summit
Over 250,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona yesterday to demonstrate against the Spanish government's national hydrological plan, days before EU leaders hold their quarterly summit in the Catalan city. Similar protests against a multi-billion water transfer scheme included in the plan were held in Madrid and other cities last year (EED 12/03/01). Despite winning parliamentary approval last summer (EED 21/06/01), the plan is still being fiercely opposed. Environmental groups are campaigning to block any EU funding (EED 15/02/02).
