EU approves national fuel excise duty cuts
EU transport ministers have formally approved a series of member state requests under the 1992 mineral oils directive to reduce fuel excise duties, all in line with European Commission recommendations. Italy can now lower tax rates on biodiesel blends until June 2004, France can cut rates on petrol containing bioethanol and diesel containing agricultural methyl esters until 2009 (EED 09/01/02), the Netherlands can reduce duty on low-sulphur (50 parts per million) petrol until 2004, and Denmark can do the same for fuel oils used in industry until January 2008.
