NGOs shine spotlight on shipping emissions
Cuts in emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from international shipping are again being urged by European environmental groups in a new pamphlet. The NGOs recommend measures both at EU and national levels, including regulatory limits, for example on sulphur levels in bunker fuels, and economic instruments, such as environmentally differentiated fairway and harbour dues. An EU action programme on shipping emissions is due from the European Commission later this year in the context of the 2001 national emission ceilings directive. See pamphlet.
