Toulouse blast factory "never to reopen"
A French fertiliser factory at which nearly 30 people were killed last year by a huge explosion will never reopen, operator Grande Paroisse, a subsidiary of Atofina, announced today. The blast was one of the worst ever at an industrial site regulated under EU "Seveso" major accident hazard legislation (EED 24/09/01) and sparked government action to reduce the risks of such incidents (EED 14/02/02). According to a statement, Grande Paroisse's main reasons for definitive closure are continuing uncertainty over what caused the explosion and strong local public concerns. See press release.
