Car hire firm offers online carbon-free deal

Leading car hire company Avis Europe claimed a world first on Thursday by offering "carbon-neutral" rentals to online customers. After a promotional two-month period, drivers will be able to offset their carbon emissions by paying an extra euros 1.60 for a five-day rental period. The initiative is part of a three-point plan under which Avis is pledging to reduce its operational carbon dioxide emissions from 2003 and become a carbon-neutral company across Europe. A business leaders' initiative to combat climate change was launched on Tuesday in Brussels during Green Week (EED 16/04/02). See press release.
