Road transport "not always least green"
Road transport lobby IRU today released a consultancy report showing that shifting freight from lorries to trains doesn't necessarily reduce energy use or CO2 emissions. ENDS Europe DAILY reported the study's interim conclusions last September (EED 21/09/01). "Combined transport is not the panacea that many politicians believe," said IRU chief Martin Marmy. "To achieve their ill-advised goal of shifting freight from road to rail, they impose penalties on road transport that only lead to even bigger penalties on both the economy and the environment." See press release. Study available on IRU web site.
