Curb urged on French gardeners' pesticide use
Environmental and consumer groups in Brittany have called for limits on pesticide use by gardeners to reduce risks of water pollution. A survey of 82 gardening centres in the region found that very little effort was being made by manufacturers or retailers to inform customers of the impact of pesticide use, or to point them to alternative products, the campaigners said. They are calling for these products to be sold in specialist outlets only. Water contamination, mainly from nitrates, has been a major problem in Brittany for almost a decade (EED 21/02/02).
