France condemned over EU waste plans
France has been negligent in failing to produce adequate waste management plans under the 1975 framework waste directive and subsequent amending legislation, the European court of justice ruled yesterday, in line with an earlier opinion from a court advisor (EED 05/07/01). At the time the case was brought against France by the European Commission, in 1999, eleven of 100 departments and six regions lacked management plans. The judgement follows similar rulings, the first of their kind, against Italy and the UK earlier this year (EED 25/01/02). See judgement in case C-292/99.
