Parliament passes new EU noise law
The European Parliament today formally endorsed a deal hammered out between the council of ministers and its rapporteur MEP on a new framework directive on noise measurement, monitoring and mapping. The compromise requires the European Commission to come up with proposals to limit noise emissions from major sources such as transport and machinery much earlier than it or ministers had wanted (EED 21/02/02). The law will formally enter the EU's statute book once ministers take the same step. See European Parliament press note and Greens/EFA press release.
