Acrylamide-in-food finding confirmed
Britain's Food standards agency (FSA) has confirmed the presence of high levels of the toxic chemical acrylamide in certain types of foods. Its announcement on Friday marks the first corroboration of findings published last month by Sweden's National food administration described at the time as "alarming" (EED 24/04/02). Meanwhile, the EU's scientific committee on food held a preliminary discussion on the acrylamide issue on Friday. It agreed to seek further information regarding "gaps" in the Swedish research, such as how the substance is produced in food. See FSA press release.
