New Finnish environment minister named
Social democrat Jouni Backman has been appointed Finland's environment minister for the ten months remaining until elections due next March. The 43-year-old became an MP in 1987, and was minister for administrative affairs between 1995 and 1999. Between 1985 and 1987 he was a member of the environmental protection commission of the province of Mikkeli. Mr Backman replaces Satu Hassi, who left office with her Green party colleagues in protest at parliamentary approval for a new nuclear power station (EED 27/05/02). See Mr Backman's CV.
