Negligence caused AZF explosion say judges
A catalogue of negligence produced the conditions behind last September's devastating explosion at the TotalFinaElf-owned AZF chemical plant near Toulouse, a preliminary report by examining magistrates has indicated. The judges found the explosion to have been a chemical accident, probably caused by ammonium nitrate mixing with chlorinated substances stored in the same area shortly beforehand, press agency AFP reports. Thirty people died and 2,500 were injured in the accident, the cause of which has remained a mystery up to now (EED 05/11/01). See AFP article.
