Campaigners jailed over oil dumping protest
Two Greenpeace activists have been jailed by Swedish authorities after they prevented a vessel from leaving the port of Norrköping for four days in a protest against illegal oil dumping in the Baltic Sea. The group claims that the MV Fagervik deliberately released oil in February 2001. A prosecution was launched, but dismissed several months later. The NGO is calling for ship owners and the industry to face full financial liability for the effects of oil discharges, whether or not intent can be proven. See press release.
