More road user tolls proposed for England
Road user charging for the entire area within London's M25 orbital motorway has been proposed in a consultancy report for the UK transport ministry. The idea is part of a package of measures aimed at limiting a predicted 33% growth in traffic by 2016. The study is the latest in a series commissioned by the ministry looking at options to tackle traffic congestion. Congestion charging is due to begin in central London early next year, marking the first large-scale scheme of its type in Europe. (EED 26/02/02). See provisional report.
