German organic farming on the up
The number of organic farms in Germany rose by 20% in 2001 to top 11,500, the national statistical office has reported. About 2.6% of all farms were organically managed in 2001, compared with 2% the previous year, with a strong concentration in eastern German states. The figures also show that nearly 603,000 hectares were organically managed in 2001, accounting for 3.5% of all farmland. Despite the rising trend, organic farming is still far behind agriculture minister Renate Künast's target of 20% of farmed area by 2010 (EED 14/05/01). See German statistics office.
