Protests as Mont Blanc tunnel gets green light
Thousands of protesters took to the streets on both sides of the Mont Blanc trans-Alpine road tunnel yesterday as lorries weighing more than 19 tonnes were allowed access again, three years after a fire killing 39 people forced the tunnel's closure. It was re-opened to cars in March and smaller lorries in April, but France delayed full access to after presidential and parliamentary elections this spring, despite strong pressure from the Italian government for an early re-opening to heavy goods vehicles (EED 03/04/02).
