Agency fears UK tyre disposal crisis
The Anglo-Welsh environment agency today warned that illegally dumped vehicle tyres could "swamp the nation" unless action is taken urgently, before restrictions on tyre landfilling under the EU's 1999 landfill directive take effect in 12 months' time. According to the agency, a survey has shown that 80% of vehicle dismantlers and garage services, tyre distributors and retreaders do not know that the law is about to change. "This ignorance... presents a major setback in the war on fly-tippers, who cost taxpayers UK£2.3m (€3.5m) in clean-up bills each year," it commented. See press release.
