Sweden moves on PAHs in car tyres
The Swedish government has commissioned the National chemicals inspectorate (KemI) to report next spring on a prospective ban on the use in tyres of oils containing toxic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Swedish scientists called for a ban three years ago (EED 23/03/99). In a statement yesterday the environment ministry described the move as part of its chemicals policy targeting carcinogenic, toxic and persistent substances. Voluntary schemes to replace PAHs with more eco-friendly alternatives had been only partially successful, it said. See Swedish environment ministry.
