Packaging recycling limits examined
Incinerating some types of small lightweight packaging items has "no clear ecological disadvantages" compared with recycling, according to a study by the German environment agency. But expected improvements in sorting technology should reinstate recycling's environmental and cost primacy in future, it concludes. The study compares recycling using current, mainly manual sorting techniques, with a mix of landfilling and incineration or 100% incineration with high energy recovery efficiency. The latter both performed equally with recycling for items such as plastic cups and small foils. See the report.
