EU backs Russian environment clean-up fund

The European Commission is to host a donor's conference on Tuesday to appeal for funds for a programme of environmental aid for north-western Russia. The initiative aims at reducing cross-border pollution spilling into EU and accession countries as part of the "northern dimension" of EU policy, launched in 1999 (EED 12/11/99). The Commission has pledged €50m towards a budget which, it is hoped, will eventually provide €1.8bn to mop up water and air pollution and deal with masses of nuclear waste in the Kola peninsula.
