New CAP "big step forward" says green group
Green organisation the European environmental bureau has welcomed the thrust of a proposed review of the EU's common agricultural policy (CAP), due to be published next week (EED 27/06/02). In a position paper, EEB approves of proposed measures aimed at decoupling farm support from production and making it dependent on animal welfare and environmental standards. But a clear commitment to earmark "rural development" funds for environmental measures is also needed, it stresses, together with a phase-out of export subsidies that harm farmers in developing countries. See position paper.
