Tax exemptions to boost "cleaner cars" in Italy
The Italian cabinet has passed a decree exempting from all road taxes for up to three years car-owners who, by December 2002, replace old, non-catalytic models with new, "cleaner" cars. Similar measures were taken in 1997-98 to reverse a slump in car sales (EED 16/03/98). Financially troubled carmaker Fiat yesterday said it would match the government's tax exemptions on purchase of one of its cars. Ford made a similar pledge. Adding up all the incentives, a prospective car buyer could save up to €2,800. See press release.
