Further fall in European new car CO2 levels
New cars made by European manufacturers emitted an average of 164 grams per kilometre (g/km) of carbon dioxide in 2001, or 2.5% less than in 2000, car makers' association Acea revealed yesterday. The organisation said the fall showed it remained on track to achieve a target of 140 g/km by 2008 set in a 1998 voluntary agreement with the EU. It noted that over 306,000 vehicles emitting under 120 g/km of CO2 were purchased in 2001 (2.5% of all sales), up from 160,000 in 2000 (EED 30/05/01). See press release.
