German cabinet approves landfill rules
New rules for waste landfills in Germany will take effect on 1 August following the government's approval of an ordinance transposing the 1999 EU landfill directive. The deadline for this passed a year ago and the European Commission threatened legal action in April. The measure partners a 2001 ordinance on waste to be landfilled. This relaxed a strict 2005 limit on the organic content of waste going to landfill to enable continued pre-treatment by mechanical-biological means as well as in incineration plants (EED 31/01/01). See press release.
