Nuclear agency's pre-summit charm offensive
Nuclear power contributes strongly to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and could be even more important in future unless governments decide to phase it out, the OECD's nuclear energy agency concludes in a pamphlet issued in the run-up to the Johannesburg sustainability summit. Exclusion of nuclear from two of the Kyoto protocol's flexible mechanisms in the period to 2008-12 is "largely symbolic", the pamphlet insists, but could have "negative implications" for later periods, when nuclear's potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions will be greater.
