Italy launches "agile" new environment agency
Italian environment minister Altero Matteoli has belatedly launched a renamed and streamlined national environment agency, a move originally due last year (EED 02/10/01). The new Agency for the protection of the environment and for technical services (Apat) results from a merger of its predecessor environment agency, Anpa, and three bodies for hydrological, geological and maritime research. It will benefit from a particularly "agile" structure and a powerful director general, the environment ministry claims. See press release.
