Kyoto clean development mechanism goes live

One of the Kyoto protocol's key flexible mechanisms was made operational this week with the announcement by the UN climate change secretariat that companies and other organisations can now apply for accreditation to verify projects proposed under the clean development mechanism (CDM). Projects subsequently approved by the UN's CDM executive board will generate emission credits even before the Kyoto protocol is ratified under a "prompt start" intended to trigger the diffusion of cleaner technologies to less developed countries as quickly as possible.
