New Belgian environment minister named
Green MP Jef Tavernier has taken over as Belgium's environment minister, succeeding Magda Aelvoet who resigned on Monday in protest at a government-approved arms sale to Nepal (EED 27/08/02). Mr Tavernier has a background in urban planning and is vice-president of the parliamentary budget and finance committee. Between 1995 and 1997 he was president of the parliamentary Agalev/Ecolo group - a coalition of the French and Dutch-speaking Green groups. He is expected to continue the policies of his predecessor ahead of general elections due next June. See biography.
