Bad summer confirmed for Baltic algae
Warnings of a bad summer for toxic algae in the Baltic Sea made this spring by Finland's environmental authorities have proved correct (EED 08/05/02). Dense blooms formed, particularly in the Gulf of Finland, and though winds and currents generally broke up the rafts before they reached the coast, beaches around Helsinki were affected this week. Widespread cases of skin irritation were reported by bathers earlier in the summer. In the Gulf of Finland the situation has been similar to the record summer of 1997, Liisa Lepistö of the Finnish environment institute told ENDS Europe DAILY (EED 04/09/97).
