EU partial ban on azo dyes confirmed for 2003
A directive banning from 11 September 2003 the use of certain azo dyes in textile and leather goods coming into contact with the skin was published yesterday in the community's official journal. The new text is amending for the 19th time the EU's 1976 directive on the marketing and use of certain dangerous substances and preparations. The provisions are also intended to harmonise laws in this field across the bloc, a move welcomed by the dye industry when proposals for a ban were first mooted (EED 09/04/99). See directive.
