EU launches personalised pollution research
EU research commissioner Philippe Busquin today launched a new European research project to measure the impact of air pollution on human health. Dubbed People, the initiative will track 2000 volunteers wearing individual pollution detectors to monitor their exposure to benzene from transport and smoking. It is intended to support implementation of the second EU air quality daughter directive, which sets limits on ambient benzene concentrations and will apply from December (EED 14/12/00).
