Spanish NGOs launch new assault on water plan
Spain's leading environmental NGOs yesterday renewed their attack on the national hydrological plan. They urged the European Commission to block structural funds for the plan's projects which "contravene the habitats and framework water directives", and to give urgent consideration to the "multitude of complaints" presented against them. The Commission has yet to decide whether to fund the plan to the tune of €18bn, as requested by the Spanish government (EED 27/05/02). It has already assigned nearly €2.5bn to projects included in the plan, according to the Spanish environment ministry. See press release.
