European food safety authority inaugurated
The independent European food safety authority (Efsa) was inaugurated yesterday "with the aim of enhancing the level and integrity of the scientific constituent of regulation", consumer protection commissioner David Byrne said. "The operation of the authority will ensure that there is functional separation of the assessment of scientific risk from risk management decisions," he said, addressing the authority's first management meeting. But Mr Byrne warned that primary responsibility for ensuring food was safe remained with producers. Creation of the authority was pledged in the food safety white paper of January 2000 (EED 22/01/02). See speech.
