German government challenges deposits ruling
The German government has asked a higher administrative court in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia to overrule a shock judgement delivered last week that declared planned deposits on one-way drinks containers to be illegal. Confirming the move, the environment ministry said it was confident that the deposits would take effect, as planned, on 1 January. The government of North-Rhine Westphalia has already indicated that it would appeal against last week's ruling (EED 11/09/02). See German environment ministry.
