EU liability regime "will not harm SMEs"

Small and medium-sized businesses will not suffer a competitive disadvantage compared with large firms under the proposed EU scheme to introduce company liability for environmental damage, according to the European Commission. Responding to a parliamentary question from Dutch MEP Kathleen van Brempt, environment commissioner Margot Wallström said that, while no SME impact assessment had been carried out, it was common practice for insurers to set premiums based on company turnover. SMEs have previously called for the creation of insurance rules before the introduction of strict liability (EED 14/05/02). See parliamentary question.
