Mine firm to sue constructors over Doñana
Boliden, the Swedish multinational mine operator at the centre of the 1998 Doñana disaster, announced yesterday that it will sue Spanish constructor Dragados for at least SKr1bn (€107m) for clean-up costs and compensation to victims in connection with the failure of the tailings dam at the Los Frailes mine. Boliden recently rejected a €45m compensation claim against it by the Spanish government (EED 08/08/02). Boliden's head Jan Johansson said his company had been "wrongly accused" and described the Spanish government's stance against it as "politically driven". See press release.
