Wallonia begins green certificate scheme
A green certificate scheme to promote renewable energy began operation in the Belgian region of Wallonia today. Electricity suppliers will have to supply 3% of their power from green sources over the next year, purchasing certificates to prove they have met their quota. The target will rise annually by one percentage point to 7% in 2007. Following appeals by federal energy minister Olivier Deleuze and the International energy agency, certificates from similar schemes run by other Belgian regions will be accepted, provided they are mutually recognised (EED 03/10/01).
