Deal on EU freight shift funding still elusive
EU transport ministers have again failed to agree on funding for the Marco Polo programme that aims to divert 12bn tonne kilometres of freight away from roads each year (EED 02/02/02). At a council meeting in Luxembourg yesterday there was no qualified majority in favour of the Danish presidency's compromise proposal of €60m funding over four years. Last week the European parliament backed the European Commission proposal of €115m over five years (EED 26/09/02). See council minutes.
