Flame retardant pollution claim challenged
European brominated flame retardant manufacturers have challenged a claim that the Arctic is becoming contaminated with polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants due to long-range environmental transport processes (EED 01/10/02). A separate study has revealed breakdown products of one PBDE, penta-BDE, said the Bromine science and environment forum, but no substances related to deca-BDE or octa-BDE. Penta-BDE is well on the way to being banned by the EU and octa-BDE is set to follow. Flame retardant makers are still fighting to save deca-BDE (EED 24/09/02). See press release.
