No escape from UK energy tax for nuclear

The UK government "has no plans" to exempt nuclear-generated electricity from the country's energy tax, the climate change levy, it has emerged, rejecting desperate pleas from stricken generator British Energy. In a letter to Britain's combined heat and power association, industry minister Patricia Hewitt said the levy was not a carbon tax and was designed to maintain "a level playing field between the major forms of energy". Exempting nuclear would reduce incentives on business to use electricity efficiently, she added, echoing arguments advanced by environmental groups and Belgian minister Olivier Deleuze (EED 01/10/02).
