UK seeks voluntary nonyl phenol cuts

The UK government is to seek a voluntary agreement with industry to reduce environmental risks from nonyl phenols, octyl phenols and their ethoxylate derivatives, the environment ministry announced on Friday. An advisory board recommended the move last October, arguing that EU-wide restrictions were on the card, but that controls of some kind were needed sooner than would be achieved through this legal process (EED 22/10/01). In December, EU scientists recommended extensive marketing and use restrictions on the chemicals (EED 06/12/01). See press release.
