New Swedish environment minister named
Lena Sommestad has been named Sweden's environment minister following the return to power of Social Democrats after September elections (EED 02/10/02). Ms Sommestad is taking over from Kjell Larsson, who is suffering from ill health. The 45-year-old economic historian stressed the importance of forthcoming work on Sweden's sustainable development strategy. She said that this reflected, in modern form, the fundamental values and views of social democracy, including the need for long-term investment in common resources - as well as market competition.
