EU air quality status reviewed
Between 1997 1999 EU member states mostly respected air pollution limit values in a suite of 1980s directives covering sulphur dioxide, particulates, lead and nitrogen dioxide, according to a European Commission review. The EU executive notes that the importance of both the directives and their official mechanism for reporting on implementation has diminished. Improved information sharing has already been developed, for example through the European environment agency, and the legal standards are due to be replaced over the course of this decade by new limits set under the 1996 air quality framework.
