Ireland condemned over dirty drinking water
Ireland was condemned by the European court of justice today for breaching 1980 EU drinking water cleanliness standards as late as 1999. The judgement rejects Irish arguments that rural group water schemes - the main source of problems - are not covered by the directive. It confirms breaches of EU microbiological standards in both public and group water supplies and also finds that Irish law fails to reflect the binding character of the 1980 directive. Ireland is now making efforts to improve drinking water quality, particularly from group water schemes (EED 14/09/01). See judgement.
