UK scientists urge shift to carbon taxes

The UK's top scientific academy has added its voice to a growing debate on the government's industrial energy tax, the climate change levy. In a report released today the Royal society called for the levy to be replaced by a true carbon tax covering not just industry but also the transport and domestic sectors. The society suggested that such a tax could also be implemented as a tradable permit scheme, arguing that either system would impose only marginal costs on the economy. See press release.
