"Freeze" agreed on deep-sea fishing effort
The North-east Atlantic fisheries committee (Neafc) agreed at its annual meeting on Friday to introduce from 1 January 2003 a temporary "freeze on effort" in deep-sea fisheries. The fishing effort, which is calculated as power, tonnage, days at sea or number of vessels, is to remain below the maximum level reached for specified species in previous years. Conservation groups the Marine conservation society and Seas at risk said the freeze was "too little too late", and urged Neafc to adopt stricter measures next year. See Neafc.
