Incineration option championed in Ireland
Irish business federation Ibec today made an unequivocal statement supporting incineration of waste "as part of a suite of targeted waste management solutions". Incineration has long been a contentious political and environmental issue in Ireland, where 90% of waste is landfilled and an annual 150,000 tonnes of rubbish is sent for incineration abroad. In a report, Ibec says that dismissing incineration is "a dangerous option that could lead to the creation of Irish waste mountains". The organisation has also renewed its calls for a national waste authority (EED 29/01/01). See press release and report.
