Danes move to widen phthalate ban
Denmark's toy and retailing industries have agreed to draft "within a couple of months" a plan for identifying and phasing out phthalates in toys, the government announced yesterday. The initiative was launched earlier this month by environment minister Hans Christian Schmidt (EED 04/11/02). Denmark has in place more restrictions on phthalates than any other EU country. "There is nothing I would like more than to forbid phthalates in all toys right here and now; but everybody who works in this field knows that unfortunately this is impossible," Mr Schmidt said yesterday.
